Spirulina

OTHER NAMES:  Spirulina fusiformis, Spirulina maxima, Spirulina platensis, Arthrospira (many others). Spirulina has been around for about 3.5 billion years. Because it is a blue-green bacterium *cyanobacterium), able to carry on photosynthesis, it is also called by some an "algae". It naturally thrives in warm, alkaline lakes and freshwater environments, particularly found in certain lakes in Mexico and Africa. So power-packed with vitamins, minerals and proteins that it has been used by astronauts.


HISTORY: Used since ancient Aztec times

Antiviral, anti-allergy (antihistaminic properties), antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial


Considered Uses


Respiratory: Has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce acute respiratory infections. Allergies, runny nose.


Cardiac: May help lower blood pressure. Protects blood vessels.


EENT: Rich in beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which help protect eyes from. May reduce age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts 


Skin: May help skin stay clear and reduce acne


Gastrointestinal: Gastro-protective


Glucose: May help lower blood sugar


Cholesterol: May help lower cholesterol (LDL) and help raise HDL


Musculoskeletal: As a complete protein, it is claimed to support athletic performance and recovery. May reduce muscle loss


Neuro: Chronic fatigue may support cognitive health, improve mood


Cancer: May help inhibit the growth of certain cancers


Immunity: Boosts immunity


Other: Supports certain anemias, supports weight loss, binds to heavy metals and helps flush them from the body. Rich in vitamin B1, B2, B3 and B12, iron, calcium, magnesium, and contains all essential amino acids. May decrease candida (fungal) growth. Decreases chronic inflammation.


Side Effects: Stomach problems


Caution/Contraindications: Transplants, autoimmune diseases, phenylketonuria, liver problems, chemotherapy, people on blood thinners, blood pressure medication, and glucose-lowering medications. It may interfere with lab tests. May increase potassium levels.
