PROPERTIES
Most of the advantages of grapefruit are due to their high vitamin A and C content. It is a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory.


CONSIDERED USES


Cardiovascular: Protectant: protects against high blood pressure (may actually decrease blood pressure), heart disease, stroke, and atherosclerosis


Respiratory: Helps with recovery from the common cold; decreases congestion, extracts claims to calm an acute sore throat, and asthma


Eyes: May help protect against macular degeneration

Gastrointestinal: Weight loss; decreases your appetite, fiber content helps digestion 


Genitourinary: Decreases the formation of kidney stones

Musculoskeletal: Protects against inflammation, muscle relaxant

Skin: Topical contains vitamin C topically cleanses, exfoliates; oral helps with collagen production and helps get rid of hyperpigmentation. Oral Vitamin A from grapefruit may help aging skin/ wrinkles. discolored skin, topically, may help with dandruff and hair growth


Glucose: May help control diabetes


Cholesterol: Helps to decrease bad cholesterol (LDL)

Immunity: upports the immunite system: Increases immunity


Cancer: May help protect against cancer (esp prostate cancer); may slow growth of tumors

Neuro: May help enhance mental acuity

Mental Health: Decreases stress

Other: Boosts energy, appetite suppressant, lowers hematocrit levels, increases potassium levels, vitamin C supplementation, head lice

Side Effects: Primarily gastrointestinal issues


Cautions/Contraindications:  Grapefruit potentially interacts with so many medications that you might want to think twice before taking it or talk to your healthcare provider about it if you take medicine regularly. Potential interactions with NUMEROUS medications. Discuss with your primary care provider before taking this. Interacts with drugs metabolized by P450 CYP3A4 system. Contraindicated in asthma, bradycardia (slow heart rate), arrhythmias, and other heart conditions, hypomagnesia (low magnesium), breast cancer, eczema, psoriasis, and high potassium

Interactions with specific medications:

  • Immunosuppressants

  • Benzodiazepines (anxiety medications)

  • Most calcium channel blockers (certain blood pressure medications)

  • Indinavir

  • Carbamazepine

  • Some statins (cholesterol medication)

  • It may interfere with some antihistamines

  • SSRIs (common antidepressants, antianxiety medications)

  • Certain blood thinners

FORMS: Whole fruit, grapefruit extract (Grapefruit Extract is NOT the same as grapefruit SEED extract), liquids, capsules, oils, sprays
