OTHER NAMES: Andrographis paniculata


HISTORY: Andrographis has been used for centuries in India, Asian countries, and China, especially in Ayurvedic medicine. It is on several foreign formularies.


PROPERTIES:

Anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antioxidant, antibacterial, astringent, analgesic

Considered Uses

Respiratory: Care for and prevent respiratory tract infections, bacterial and viral. Common cold, cough, sinusitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, sore throat, allergies. May prevent (and may help treat) flu—Good public reviews


Cardiovascular: Prevention of heart disease, decreases atherosclerosis, may help lower blood pressure

GI: Ulcerative colitis, liver protection, digestive problems, diarrhea, constipation, gas, worms, hemorrhoids


Genitourinary: Pyelonephritis, kidney problems

Musculoskeletal: Rheumatoid arthritis, Osteoarthritis

Skin: Leprosy, wounds, skin ulcers, itchiness

Glucose: May support lower sugar in diabetes


Colesterol: May help lower triglycerides


Immunity: Immune support

Cancer:
Prevention and cure (not scientifically proven)


Infectious Disease: May be instrumental in MTB, gonorrhea, syphilis, malaria, cholera, leptospirosis. It may inhibit viral replication in HIV/AIDS, Japanese encephalitis, Dengue fever, measles and COVID-19.


Other: Rabies, reduces fever, snake bites, and insect bites and may help lower triglycerides and alcohol use disorder.

SIDE EFFECTS: Vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, headaches, nausea, rash, rhinitis (runny nose), fatigue, occasionally liver problems (infrequent), and enlarged lymph nodes may cause miscarriage.


CONTRAINDICATIONS: These may interfere with reproduction, may lower blood pressure, and may worsen autoimmune problems (i.e., lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, MS), pregnancy, bleeding disorders, or those on blood thinners. Caution with those on blood pressure, autoimmune, glipizide medications and blood thinners.

Elixers and tea (cut form), extract, tablets, capsules. Doses are not currently available.
