OTHER NAMES: Petroselinum, Persil, Jaafari, Peterslie (There is flat - or Italian parsley - and curly parsley)


HISTORY: Used for medicinal purposes since the Middle Ages.


PROPERTIES: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immune booster, antibacterial, analgesic, anti-cancer, antiseptic, anti-cancer, and antifungal, carminative

Considered Uses

Respiratory: Asthma, cough


Eyes: Helps prevent macular degeneration, corneal, retinal damage

and cataracts.


Cardiovascular: May help lower blood pressure


Gastrointestinal: Oral antiseptic, halitosis, antiflatulent, constipation, indigestion,

possible increases liver health, nausea, IBS, acid reflux


Genitourinary: Increases menstrual flow/helps regulate menstruation,

PMS (premenstrual syndrome), fertility, decreases menstrual cramping, may be helpful for urinary problems and urinary tract infections (UTIs) (German Commission E) and may help prevent kidney stones


Musculoskeletal: Vitamin K in parsley helps keep bones healthy, curbs osteoporosis (boosts bone growth), decreases joint stiffness, and reduces rheumatoid arthritis.


Neurologic: Decreases neuronal damage caused by Alzheimer's


Skin: Helps with acne, decreases dark patches, insect bites, increases hair growth, soothes skin and bacterial skin issues


Glucose: Helps reduce blood sugar


Cholesterol: Helps lower cholesterol


Immunity: Helps boost immunity


Cancer: Antioxidant. May help decrease cancer risk (flavenoid may help decrease breast cancer risk)


Other: Diuretic, promotes weight loss, Source of vitamins A,B, C and K, iron, potassium, manganese, phosphorus, and calcium, increases metabolism, may help prevent anemia

SIDE EFFECTS: Occas skin or mucus membrane reactions. Anemia, liver or kidney problems (large doses), hypoglycemia, fluid retention, and possibly increase in blood pressure


CAUTIONS/CONTRAINDICATIONS: Blood-thinning medications or bleeding disorders (may slow blood clotting – increase bleeding), kidney disease
